Kauai is wetter, greener and quieter. Maui is drier and has more towns, trails and ways to spend a day. NOAA normals put Lihue at 36.22 inches of rain a year and Kahului at 16.21. Pick Kauai for scenery and calm, Maui for variety, and check storm closures first.
I have flown to both islands from San Diego several times, so this is the side-by-side I use: which island fits the trip you have in mind? The table below compares the basics. The sections after it explain what they mean for different travelers.

Which island gets more rain?
Kauai does. The State of Hawaii Data Book 2023 reprints NOAA climate normals for 1991 to 2020. They show 36.22 inches a year at Lihue Airport and 16.21 inches at Kahului Airport. That is more than double.
Airport figures are not the whole story. Rain falls unevenly on both islands, and the airports sit in low coastal spots. The data book does not give numbers for the mountains or the resort coasts, so treat these as a rough guide only.
When I compare islands, I put weather and logistics ahead of sights. On islands like these, that order matters. A trip to the wetter side of either one works best with a loose schedule.
A drier base makes plans easier to keep. A wetter one makes the waterfalls and green slopes that people come to photograph.
Getting there: Lihue and Kahului airports
Both airports are run by the Hawaii Department of Transportation. Hawaii DOT calls Lihue the primary airport on Kauai and Kahului the primary airport on Maui. Neither airport page lists airlines or fares, so check your airline for routes.
On Kauai, Hawaii-guide.com puts Poipu about 30 minutes from Lihue Airport and Princeville about 60 minutes. Its estimates leave out rush hour, when it says to add about half an hour.
I check permits and access rules before I check scenery. Both islands reward that habit.
Is Kauai or Maui easier to drive?
In my experience, Maui is easier for a first car trip, because its main resort areas sit close to Kahului. Kauai is smaller, but its drives are out and back from a home base. Book a rental car early on either island.
Maui has its own long drives. The National Park Service says the Haleakala summit district is about 2.5 hours from Kahului, and the Kipahulu district is about 4 hours. The two districts are not connected by road, though both can be reached from Kahului.
Weigh these numbers before you commit. A drive that looks short on a map can fill a whole day on either island.
What is closed on Kauai after Hurricane Lowell?
Several places remain closed or limited, and parks have reopened in steps. Hawaii State Parks says Haena State Park reopened for day use on Thursday, October 15, 2026. Winter hours are 7 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. The state’s November 2 notice says the Kalalau Trail reopened to permitted overnight camping that day, with reservations required for day and overnight use. For day hiking to Hanakapiai, the state’s Haena page lists current trail status, so check it before you plan that hike.
Hawaii State Parks said in its November 2 notice that Kokee Road is closed until further notice and that general Kauai camping is closed. Waimea Canyon Lookout reopened on Saturday, October 24, but other lookouts stay closed. The notice says other Kauai state parks remain closed. Separate state notices say Wailua River landing and trailhead access reopened on September 21, 2026, but hiking beyond the trailhead to Uluwehi Falls, often called Secret Falls, remains closed.
Hawaii State Parks says storm-related reservation refunds apply statewide. These details are as of November 5, 2026. Conditions are changing fast, so read the state parks notices the day you drive out.
What is the Lahaina recovery status on Maui?
Lahaina is still rebuilding after the August 2023 wildfire. It is a place where many people lost homes and loved ones, and visitors should treat it with care. Plan as a guest, not as a sightseer.
In July 2026, the County of Maui said Front Street would reopen to vehicles on August 1, 2026, from Papalaua Street to Shaw Street. It said some nearby streets stay closed for harbor work, and it asked the public to keep off private property and out of fenced areas. Rules can change while rebuilding goes on, so check Maui County notices for what is open now.
Respect any signs and fences, and do not treat the burn zone as an attraction.
Kauai vs Maui for hikers and snorkelers
Hikers have strong cases on both islands. Kauai offers the Kalalau Trail and the Kokee and Waimea Canyon area. Both are limited right now, as the closure details above show. When the trails fully reopen, Kauai suits hikers who like green, steep scenery.
Maui offers Haleakala. The National Park Service says vehicles entering the park from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. need a sunrise reservation, booked in advance. NPS lists the sunrise reservation at $1 per vehicle and the park entrance fee at $30 per private vehicle, good for three days. Its conditions page, updated February 11, 2026, says the Pools of Oheo in the Kipahulu District are not open for swimming. They can be viewed from the Kuloa Point Trail.

Snorkelers should watch the surf. Ocean conditions change with the season and from shore to shore on both islands. Our guide to the best snorkeling on Kauai covers more spots. Check surf reports and posted warnings before you get in.
Sunrise slots and park entries fill quickly. Waianapanapa near Hana requires a reservation for parking and entry, per Hawaii State Parks.
Kauai vs Maui by traveler type
These are judgment calls based on the facts above. Your dates and budget may change them.
- First-timers: Maui. It has more towns and services and a drier base.
- Hikers: Kauai for green canyon and coastal trails once Lowell closures lift. Maui for the Haleakala summit, if you book the sunrise slot or go after 7 a.m.
- Snorkelers: Either. Check surf reports and posted warnings each day on both islands.
- Families: Maui, for the easier logistics. Kauai works if you are happy to base in one area and keep drives short. See our things to do in Kauai guide.
- Couples: Kauai for a quieter, greener trip; Maui if you want more restaurants, towns and choices.
- Road-trippers: Maui, with its Road to Hana. Kauai drives are out and back from a home base.
A trip to both islands is possible, but each move costs a flight and a day of packing. If you are short on time, my pick is one island done well.
